CHAPTER 1 --Vikings at the Door

       "The Vikings!   The Vikings are coming!"

       The words were shouted at top of her voice and those who heard her dropped their tools and started running toward the keep, taking on the cry:

       "The Vikings are coming!"

       Harvest time was the worst.   If they could not gather their harvest, the winter would be terrible, many would die of hunger.   Mostly babes and older people.   But then, what would be left?

       The men were at war.   If the Vikings were coming, 'twas a sign that their men would not ever come back -- they were already dead or dying, or enslaved...
