Medieval Occupations in the Village and Bourg

The Castle was almost self sufficient, but the villeins supplied the majority of foodstuffs for the kitchens (fishmongers, farmers, herdsmen, millers).

Serving the rest of the population were innkeepers, roadmenders, woodwards (for the forests), blacksmiths, carpenters, etc.

Through the need of bartering for products that were not available locally, commerce developed, and in special centres where fairs were held, towns started to grow from the original villages. All professions were grouped in guilds for protection, and the knowledge and membership in the guild was passed inside families from father to sons.

Such professions were: tanners, soap makers, cask makers, cloth makers, candle makers (chandlers), gold and silver smiths,bakers, doctors, painters, plasterers, potters, brick and tile makers, glass makers, shipwrights, etc.
